Safety at Niagara Arms

Safety and Security

When moving into Niagara Arms you will be given a key for your suite, which will allow you to keep your suite locked whenever you are away from your room. Our front door will be locked at nine-thirty (9:30) in the evening and will remain locked until seven thirty (7:30) in the morning. All other doors to the facility will be kept locked and alarmed at all times. Upon request, we will issue you a front door key if you are planning to return after the front door has been locked. Late visitors are asked to phone ahead to notify staff of their arrival time, to ensure entry into the facility.

When you are away from your suite, we encourage you to keep your door locked, as Niagara Arms assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen items. Residents' are discouraged from keeping large amounts of cash or valuable items in their suites.

Niagara Arms has installed an emergency call system in each suite and each bathroom. You are able to call down to the Nursing Office and talk with a nurse any time, day or night. The call bell in each bathroom is for emergencies and can only be turned off by the nurse who answers your call in the room.

For the protection and safety of everyone, here are some guidelines for your personal safety:

" Soliciting of any kind is not permitted at Niagara Arms or at your suite door. Please advise a staff member    immediately if anyone is attempting to do so.
" Strangers loitering in or around Niagara Arms should be reported to a staff member immediately.
" For those requiring assistance or reassurance when bathing and/or showering, please notify a staff member    when planning to do so.
" Please advise a staff member when you are leaving the building at anytime. Management needs to know who    is in or out of the building at all times.
" Please notify the shift supervisor immediately if you should lose your key.
" ABSENCE - If you are planning to be away for a meal, over night or for a vacation, please notify the shift    supervisor well in advance so your medications can be prepared to take with you.

Fire Safety

For your personal fire protection, every suite is equipped with a smoke and heat detector. The smoke detector alarm will ring in your suite only, whereas the heat detector will initiate our fire alarm system. When the heat detectors are activated or anyone pulls a "fire station" alarm, the fire bells will begin to ring in the facility. Should either a "heat alarm" or a "pull station" be activated, this automatically notifies the fire department, which results in the immediate dispatch of fire/emergency vehicles to Niagara Arms.

Niagara Arms has been designed with a concrete fire wall dividing the building at the center core, thus should an evacuation be necessary, we may not have to evacuate out of the building, but only do a lateral transfer to the opposite wing of the building behind the fire doors.

By law, you are required to read our Resident's Fire Manual upon your admission. Niagara Arms is required by law to conduct periodic fire drills. Should you have any questions concerning fire safety, please consult our Administrator.
